OK, I just did the experiment of creating a UTF-8 document on my mac  
containing the word "日本語", and exporting it to PostScript. The  
ps file refers to the 3 Kanji as /gid2, /gid3, and /gid1, and spends  
~6 kB of obfuscated code defining them!

This is what libraries are for, I guess...
