I've had conflicting experiences even on the same version.

For instance, Debian 3.0 installed perfectly on P2-350 I had.  A few
years later (3-4), I go to reinstall (a harddrive failed partially
cripling the machine), and the second time around, for the life of me I
can't get Debian 3.0 to install nicely.

So, for that machine I switched to Ubuntu.  It went on flawlessly and
has been painfree since.  I think Ubuntu is most likely going to be my
first choice of linux for the time being.

Although, I use RHEL3 and RH9 at work.
