I am perfectly content and happy with the above behavior.
gtk+ 1.2.x is dead, long live gtk+ 2.x. :)

PS. Seriously, developers should not spend any time backporting changes
to gtk+ 1.2.x as official support will be dropped for it in the next
release of gEDA/gaf.
