One question I have, is it worth while (or even possible/easy) to make
this net drawing behavior configurable? Is the gain drawing nets in this
"L" shape really that much better that maybe it should be the only mode?

On my box, it jumps from grid point to grid point. That is I
zoom in quite a bit and as I draw a net (or any object for that matter),
it jumps from grid point to the nearest grid point. However, it seems
that YMMV.
