Stuart, Your latest gEDA CD compiles ok on my SuSE 10.0 after the gspiceui patch.
The only comment I have is that the dependencies are not really handled in a good way. For example, the notion about the necessity to have "gperf" installed to make Icarus work better, is just a short glimpse in the log. It might be a good idea to be able to back one step and restart the failing compilation (after installation of extra software? ) instead of just being able to choose on "abort" or "forward anyway...".
