I was able to repeat the behavior with the tut1.pcb example. How much grid you see is very dependent on zoom level. With my file, the grid is always present in the top view regardless of zoom, while it is always missing in the bottom view, regardless of zoom. My board is larger and much more complex than the tutorial example.
I also notice that at very high levels of zoom, the whole drawing area will turn one (layer's) color. This occurs when I am zoomed in an area outside the board where nothing is drawn. Sometimes when this happens I see a message like:
(pcb-bin:19798): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_draw_points: assertion `(points != NULL) && (npoints > 0)' failed
in the window where I invoked PCB.

I've reproduced it but would describe it a little bit different:
To reproduce:
1. Load the example pcb file:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/share/pcb/tutorial> pcb tut1.pcb
2. Toggle to the solder side (using TAB)
3. Zoom in using wheel mouse or "z" somewhere left or right the board
The grid is there in the center of the board but not on the left and the
right side. (top and bottom is ok)
I've attached two screen shots with different zoom-levels.
Should I add a bug tracker at SF, too?
regards
Werner
