It's not enough to see the solder side, you have to be on the solder side. Make sure the solder layer is the current layer, and it may help to Tab so that the whole display is mirrored.
Here's what I'm doing: I can see my layout, with traces in brown and component outlines in black. The select box next to the brown layer marked 'solder' on the left is ticked. Using the text tool, I can create text, and it appears in brown and in the correct orientation. Problem is, the component outlines are not mirrored so I know I am currently looking at the component side of the board. I press tab, or tick View->Enable View Solder Side. Component outlines are now mirrored, so I must be viewing the solder side of the board. Traces are still in brown, component outlines are in grey. The text I have previously entered is mirrored, which is bad (but expected, because I entered it when viewing the other side of the board). Any new text I enter appears mirrored, which is bad. If I now tick the box next to the black option marked 'silk' on the left hand side, and then enter text, the text appears in the correct orientation but upside-down. This is putting stuff onto the silk layer, though, which doesn't appear with the traces when I print out the layout. In addition, moving the mouse to the edge of the screen scrolls the window in the opposite direction to expected. Hope that makes sense - any input would be great :) If it would clarify things I can put screenshots up somewhere. Thanks for your help so far.
