Going back to the original question. I think geda and pcb and the simulation tools offer an opportunity to physics, electrical, computer, and software engineering students, in that by having the code, they can study and develop the simulation algorithms. It is all well and good to be able to run a simulation but is it really acceptable to have a black box that you put circuits into and get results out of? This is like replacing the teaching of long division with the teaching of using a calculator. In my opinion... not adequate.
If you want to come work with me, show me, that you know how your simulator got to the final result. Show me where the simulation can't be trusted. Show me how the simulation engine could be improved. Or even one large step better to have done it. I can't see how this can be done with proprietary closed source programs unless they make the students sign an NDA and are given access to their code. At this moment I would like to thank Dr Pete Knoke for introducing me to the Minix operating system which eventually lead to me to linux and other open source projects such as geda. I would also like to concede to Dr. Knoke the point he took from me in a computer architecture class in which during an examine he asked that given an unlimited budget, what technology should be used to build the next generation of supper computer. This being the late 1980's, when Seymore Crey was trying to construct his next computer with Galium Arsenide, I insisted that I wanted my computer to work and selected ECL. Dr Knoke and I exchanged articles over who was right for the rest of the semester. History has settled this question and the answer is neither gallium arsenide nor ecl, the answer is massive parallelism implemented in some version of cmos or other. But, my answer was incorrect and so I finally (18 years later) accept the test results. These are the places that GEDA belongs in Science and Engineering Curriculum of a Good University.
