Keep in mind, though, that the BOM is part of the project - a list of what's chosen.
What I'm talking about is something that's part of the *database* - a list of what's possible. The BOM might say, for example, that U14 is an SN74LVC1G86DCKR, but it's the database that says what symbols, footprints, vendor part number, etc, that part will use.
