A wise friend of mine went further. He said: "Noise is just a name engineers use for problems that they don't understand so that they can dismiss them -- as in: 'Oh, that's just noise.'" That's pretty much a direct quote. I saw a number of young engineers walk into a buzz saw by saying "That's just noise." They never said that to Jim more than once :) Now that I've accumulated some gray in my beard, I definitely understand the humor value in being one of the cranky old guys.
