These are both really about the autotools, which in turn are about the difficulties of applying "make" across incompatible environments. These difficulties are orders of magnitude smaller for "make" as a tool to script gEDA. My gEDA makefiles work without modification on Linux and MacOSX. Windows? Well, if you insist on using a maliciously incompatible system there will no doubt be a cost.
