I believe some of these tools keep footprints in databases, not separate files. And, as DJ pointed out, the issue isn't confined to footprints. I can never remember the !...@#$% pintype abbreviations. But a general facility could be nice. Still need a script per back end tool to track down footprints, SPICE models, etc., but not too bad. Probably can't be easier.
