But what I really hate about proprietary software is the fact that you have to pay for the most recent release. Others mentioned it already, but the ASCII file format is a big plus of gEDA and PCB. Keeping the files in revision control systems is no problem, as the diffs are so small compared to a binary file where the whole file is stuffed in the RCS. Or for example I coded my own script to keep my symbols in sync with the Xilinx fitter report. Given the pin count of todays CPLDs or FPGAs this saves me a lot of hassle. You can create net lists for AFAIK 20+ PCB programs....
