What I forgot: my personal experience is with PostgreSQL (have it installed under Linux and Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, works excellent). This is what I would use for a shared environment (eg. web-resource). For read only or single user systems sqlite may be useful. However, the table definitions and some methods of filling the tables should work identical with both.
