gEDA-user: How to connect SMD to copper plane in pcb 1.99

Hi,
have been trying to find out how to connect a pad in a smd to the copper plane 
on the same side. The standard behaviour of the rectangle is to not connect 
to a pad, and the thermal tool seem to work with vias or pins only.
