I downloaded the kicad.zip file and installed it on winxp. Well it
wasn't really an install from windows point of view. It just unzipped
into a local tree. Did not create any links in the start menu.
I ran the "./kicad/winexe/pcbnew.exe" program and managed to load an
example file pcb layout. Was able to zoom and pan. This looks real.
