You can change the refdes inside PCB by positioning the cursor over the part and hitting the 'n' key. It will prompt you for a new refdes; defaulting to the current one.
But then you're back to the shorting problem. If you're not into manually editing netlists, I think the 8 copies in the schematic solution is the most elegant one.
