Is it possible that a specific window manager is somehow causing
this problem to be exaggerated for some people? What window manager are
the people involved in this thread running?

I am using KDE withe Fedora Core 3.
I have also tried using Gnome which shows the same problem except that
it is still a bit flakey even when not maximised
