That's what you have to pay for the convenience of doing an update once a week 
and have a fairly updated machine even if it isn't a PIIII.

You have yourself experienced the inconveniences a bleeding edge system.

DLL hell is indeed a problem with geda, but that is a geda problem and not the 
distribution.
