In my experience, it looks like SuSE 9 and 10 series will leave gcc off a box by default (you can always use Yast to install it easily enough). Considering SuSE's goal as a business-class desktop OS environment as well as a data center-class back-office server OS, this makes perfect sense. Leaving off the C compiler by default helps to stop the spread of self-reproducing, source-based worms or trojans. In this case, a bug to one is a feature to another, which aids in default, out of the box, system security. -- Samuel A. Falvo II
