Geeklog lets you override some of the block templates. Specifically, all system / error messages will use a '_msg_block' template (if it exists) so that you could use, say, a red border around them or something. The idea is that you set $_BLOCK_TEMPLATE['_msg_block'] to the template files that should be used instead of the normal block header / footer templates. Check the functions.php file of some of the included themes (clean, for example).
