OK, with r1824, it now takes ~11 seconds to go from program start to a state where UI interactions end up with different images being rendered. For a directory of 46,000 images, this seems pretty reasonable. And this seems an unlikely enough case that I'm not sure how valuable it'd be to optimize further.
