Not quite; the point of 1.0.x is that if 1.1 is trouble it's usable. And even conservative distributions will go from 1.0 to 1.0.1, and you can say in the release announcement: if you have patches to this that belong upstream, send them in. As pkgsrc maintainer, I'd update to 1.0.x, and then later to 1.1, and if trouble could revert or advise to use the old version.
