I read it and from the new information I might have an idea what the problem is. Please confirm that you are using it on ubuntu (or debian) and that one of the mount options is utf8 (grep vfat /proc/mounts). If that is the case then this is a long running debian bug that the kernel maintainer refuses to fix (He even has introduced the bug against better knowledge as the kernel folks do explicit not recommend to use that option.) Unfortunately there is no way (I know) to switch off this option. So you have to build a own kernel to test it.
