Hi Hendrik

Indonesia’s easternmost island of Papua is home to more than 250 different
Indigenous linguistic groups. Wabu Block, in the Intan Jaya regency,
belongs mostly to the Moni tribe who have inhabited the land for thousands
of years.

But for far too long, Indigenous peoples there have suffered endless human
rights abuses at the hands of Indonesian authorities.

*Now, the Indonesian government has destructive gold mining plans that will
endanger both Papuan lives, and Papuan land. *

*We cannot let them get away with it.

Earlier this year, the central Indonesian government forced through
legislation creating three new autonomous regions in Papua. Indigenous
Papuans opposed this, arguing that the central government had once again
neglected the views and needs of their people. This disregard is familiar
to Indigenous Papuans - their oppression has spanned over decades.

However in 2019, it escalated dramatically when the Indonesian government
significantly increased the presence of security forces in the Intan Jaya
regency. Since then, raids and beatings carried out by soldiers and police
officers have become commonplace. At least 12 Indigenous Papuans in the
region have been victims of unlawful killings, leaving many residents with
no option but to flee their houses and villages in search of safety in
other cities and the forest.

Against this terrifying backdrop, The Indonesian government’s plans to mine
in Wabu block are reprehensible. Doing so will not only damage and exploit
Indigenous land, it will fuel the existing conflict and repression in the
region and put the lives and human rights of Papuans at even greater risk.

Together our collective voices can challenge this injustice and let
Indigenous Papuans know that they are not alone.

*Please join me in calling on the Indonesian government to pause the
licensing process of Wabu Block, and respect the human rights of Indigenous
Papuans, and Indigenous land now.

*P.S:* Indonesia has legal obligations to respect and protect Indigenous
people’s rights - including their rights to their lands and
territories. *Together
we can hold them accountable, by taking action now.
