The solid-fuel missile called Zolfaqar, referencing prophet Mohammed’s sword, was unveiled a few days back by production was officially launched on Sunday, The ministry said that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine was based entire on deterrence. The IRNA news agency reported that the tactical ballistic missile has a range of 700 kilometers (430 miles) and a high-precision guidance system. Officials pointed out that the missile carries a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) payload, that enables each missile to hit an entire group of targets. It is also said to be capable of evading jamming signals in electronic warfare and would be ready for service by March 2017. Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, who made an appearance at the official launch on Sunday said that “the new missile will enhance Iran's missile capabilities.” He added that the tactical missile was entirely indigenous in designing and making served the purpose of enhancing Iran's missile combat might as stated by the Supreme Leader. As the Sacred Defense Week celebrations marking the annual commemoration of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war were underway, the country unveiled the Zolfaqar missile in the port city of Bandar Abbas. The country has held many military parades through the week to demonstrate its military might. With this, Iran has also marked the beginning of its mass production of long-range ballistic missiles. A report in Jerusalem-based Times of Israel news agency claimed that the the truck carrying the Zolfaqar missiles had a banner around it that read, “If the leaders of the Zionist regime make one false move, the Islamic republic will destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa,” referring to two major Israeli cities.
