Defense Minister Says Younger Indonesians Lack Patriotism Jakarta. Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu says the military-run "Bela Negara" or "Defend the Nation" program, aimed at guarding against foreign influences, is meant to instill a spirit of nationalism in Indonesia's youth. Speaking in in Jakarta on Thursday (25/08), Ryamizard said the nation, especially the younger generation, is lacking in patriotism. Since radicalization, terrorism, drugs, natural disasters and proxy wars are major threats, a weak nationalist spirit might turn them into more serious problems, he said. The program is meant to mobilize all communities. "We designed a program from kindergarten to university level. We expect that in 20 years, the nation will be solid. [...] We also educate street kids and thugs. Don't leave them behind," he said.
