*Molybdenum* is a chemical element
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_element> with symbol *Mo* and atomic
number <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_number> 42. The name is from
Neo-Latin <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Latin> *molybdaenum*, from Ancient
Greek <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek> Μόλυβδος*molybdos*,
meaning lead <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead>, since its ores were
confused with lead ores.[6]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molybdenum#cite_note-CRCdescription-6>
Molybdenum
minerals have been known throughout history, but the element was discovered
(in the sense of differentiating it as a new entity from the mineral salts
of other metals) in 1778 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Wilhelm_Scheele>. The metal was first
isolated in 1781 by Peter Jacob Hjelm
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Jacob_Hjelm>.

Molybdenum does not occur naturally as a free metal
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_metal> on Earth; it is found only in
various oxidation states <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidation_state> in
minerals. The free element, a silvery metal
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal> with a gray cast, has the
sixth-highest
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elements_by_melting_point> melting
point <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melting_point> of any element. It
readily forms hard, stable carbides <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbide>
in alloys <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alloy>, and for this reason most
of world production of the element (about 80%) is used in steel
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel> alloys, including high-strength
alloys and superalloys <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superalloy>.

Most molybdenum compounds have low solubility
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solubility> in water, but when
molybdenum-bearing minerals contact oxygen
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen> and water, the resulting molybdate
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molybdate> ion MoO2−
4 is quite soluble. Industrially, molybdenum compounds
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_compound> (about 14% of world
production of the element) are used in high-pressure
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-pressure> and high-temperature
applications as pigments <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigment> and
catalysts <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalysis>.

Molybdenum-bearing enzymes
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Molybdenum_enzymes> are by far the
most common bacterial catalysts for breaking the chemical bond
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_bond> in atmospheric molecular
nitrogen <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen> in the process of
biological nitrogen fixation
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_fixation>. At least 50 molybdenum
enzymes are now known in bacteria, plants, and animals, although only
bacterial and cyanobacterial enzymes are involved in nitrogen fixation.
These nitrogenases <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogenase> contain
molybdenum in a form different from other molybdenum enzymes, which all
contain fully oxidized molybdenum in a molybdenum cofactor
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molybdenum_cofactor>. These various
molybdenum cofactor enzymes are vital to the organisms, and molybdenum is an
 essential element <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_element> for
life in all higher eukaryote <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eukaryote>
organisms,
though not in all bacteria.
