It provides very significant insights into thebuilding of socialism in China on the basis of both direct experience and deepreflection on the questions involved. — RUPE OnurcanÜlker:Could you please start with introducing yourself? FredEngst (Yang Heping): I was born in Beijing in 1952and raised in China’s ancient capital, Xi’an. I came back to Beijingwhen our family got transferred in 1966, before the Cultural Revolutionstarted. I spent firsttwenty some years of my life in China—mostly in Xi’an—and the last eight yearsof that time was in Beijing during the peak of the Cultural Revolution; butBeijing was not as chaotic as other places at that time. After themiddle school, I spentfive years working in a factory together with my classmates. Some otherclassmates of mine went to the countryside and I also wanted to go with them,but I was not allowed because I was a foreigner. Later, after I tried, mybrother and sister were able to go. Then I went to the U.S. in 1974 and spentanother thirty some years there. But I came back often: I spent the whole yearhere in 1988 right before the events in Beijing in 1989. Then I spent anotheryear, 2000, to teach here. In between, I also came back quite often to see myparents and my classmates. Inthe end, I decided to move back to China in 2007. Since then I’ve been teachingand doing my research here. My lifelong pursuit is understanding politics andeconomics of Mao’s period. In this sense, I can say it has been mostfruitful in last ten years. Fred Engst lahir di Peking tahun 1952 dan dibesarkan di Xi'an. Sampai umur 20 tahun, Fred Engst tinggal pada pokoknya di Xi'an, selama 8 tahun terakhir dari masa itu dia lewatkan di Peking. Setelah tamat sekolah menengah, Fred bekerja di sebuah pabrik. Walaupun dia ingin, tapi sebagai orang asing, Fred tidak diijinkan pergi ke desa. Tapi, kemudian dia berhasil juga mendapatkan ijin untuk pergi ke desa. Tahun 1974, Fred pergi ke AS dan tinggal di sana selama 30 tahun. Tahun 1988, sebelum peristiwa tahun 1989, Fred tinggal di Tkk,. sampai tahun 2000. Setelah itu, Fred mondar mandir antara AS dan Tkk untuk melakukan penelitian berhubungan dengan politik dan ekonomi selama periode Mao. (bersambung)
