20th Anniversary of Kerusuhan Mei 1998 di IndonesiaThis event commemorates the 
May 1998 Violence that took place 20 years ago in Indonesia. Co-hosted by 
Monash University's School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics 
(LLCL) and the Indonesian Community Forum in Australia, the one day seminar 
features expert panel speakers, testimonials, photo and art exhibition.

Our guest speakers will include, among others, the Honorable Consul General Ibu 
Spica Alhpanya Tutuhatunewa and leading academics and alumni from Monash 
University, Melbourne University, SOAS University and University of Indonesia. 
Panel sessions will be held throughout the day. The event will be presented 
with Indonesian and English language parts. Morning tea and lunch is provided.

There will be a photographic exhibition from the national and international 
news media on display, and a commemorative sculpture courtesy of Indonesian 
artist, Elina Simbolon.  Join our students, academics,  alumni and friends to 
this special event.

   -    Dr Siaw Tiong Djin, Board member, Herb Feith Foundation Dr Djin 
received his PhD in political science from Monash University. He is an engineer 
and passionate about Indonesian politics.
   -    Dewi Anggraeni , Journalist and Writer Dewi has written and published 
extensively in Australia & Indonesia. As an Australian correspondent for TEMPO 
news magazine, she reported on Australia & the Pacific. She has contributed to 
Femina, The Jakarta Post, Pesona, and other publications in Indonesia, 
Australia and a number of other countries. My Pain, My Country, is her twelfth 
book.
   -    Rani Pramesti, Actor and Performance Artist Rani Pramesti is a proud 
Chinese-Javanese-Indonesian-Australian woman. Before jumping heart-first into 
the arts, Rani practiced as a social worker in homeless shelters and refugee 
support organisations in Sydney. Now, as a performance maker, an intercultural 
producer and an advocate for the arts, Rani revels in the interface between 
social justice and the arts. She builds bridges across cultures, generations 
and disciplines.
   -    Dr Jemma Purdey, Research Fellow, Faculty of Arts, Monash University 
and Australia Indonesia Centre Dr Purdey’s research interests include 
biography, human rights and reconciliation in Indonesia and Australia’s 
relationship with Indonesia.
   -    Dr Ken Setiawan , McKenzie Research Fellow, University of Melbourne 
Asia Institute Dr Setiawan's research interests are in contemporary Indonesian 
politics and society, with a specific interest in issues of human rights, 
historical justice, reconciliation and reparation. She is the author of 
Promoting Human Rights: National Human Rights Commissions in Indonesia and 
Malyasia. (Leiden University Press, 2013)
   -    Dr Soe Tjen Marching, Writer, Academic and Activist Dr Marching is 
working as a senior lecturer at SOAS University of London. Dr Marching is the 
founder of Indonesian magazine Majalah Bhinneka (Bhinneka Magazine), which 
promotes critical thinking about gender, politics and religions. She has 
written several essays on women, Indonesian politics, and religions in 
Indonesian, English and German.
   -    Wahyu Susilo Wahyu Susilo is the executive director of Migrant Care, a 
non-governmental organisation that advocates for migrant workers' rights.
   -    Bela Kusumah Journalist, former executive producer SBS Radio- 
Indonesian Program. Founder of the Independent Journalists Alliance (Aliansi 
Jurnalis Independen, AJI- Melbourne Branch) and Yayasan Suara Independen
   -    Christianto Wibisono A prominent Chinese Indonesian business analyst, 
Christianto Wibisono co-founded the Indonesian magazine TEMPO and founded and 
chaired the Indonesian Business Data Center. He fled the nation during the 
height of the 1998 riots and lived in the U.S. after his daughter's house was 
looted and burnt to the ground. He returned to Indonesia in 2006.
   -    Ms Spica A. Tutuhatunewa The Honorable Consul General, Republic of 
Indonesia for Victoria & Tasmania
   -    Elina Simbolon A Master of Fine Arts student at RMIT University. She 
completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Monash University in 2016. Her work is 
heavily influenced by her experience of life in Indonesia during the New Order 
regime. Memory, loss, cultural trauma and politics are the centre of her works. 
Elina deals with these very important subject matters and complex relationships 
with materials and processes.
