Thanks Johannes.

I tried a straight:

svn update && svn revert . && aclocal && autoconf && ./configure && make

same issue.

I've attached the webcam lsusb -v info, maybe the 901 has a different camera?

I'm linking with libv4l-0 0.5.7-1~intrepid1

at least there is a difference in here: i have libv4l 0.5.9-1

the webcams seem to be fairly the same, though i get
> ID 04f2:b071 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd 2.0M UVC WebCam / CNF7129
whereas yuo have
> ID 04f2:b071 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd

most likely this difference is due to the kernel used: i am running 2.6.29-2 (debian squeeze/sid); intrepid has 2.6.27.11.14

now after ages of recompiling Gem on my eee with the steps as you describe them, i do:
pd -lib Gem examples/04.video/00.SimpleTest.pd
and click on "1" to start rendering.

i see myself (lo! it works), and this is what i read:
pd-console:
> video driver 0: video4linux2
> video driver 0: video4linux
> video driver 0: ieee1394 for linux
[...]
> v4l2: changed size from 64x64 to 640x480
> v4l2: GEM: pix_video: Opened video connection 0xC

and on the console (stderr):
> v4l2: vidioc_s_crop: Invalid argument
> v4l2: VIDIOC_S_FMT: Invalid argument

that's it.
everything's happy (though i wonder how to get the advertised 1.3 mega pixels out of my camera with a fixed resolution of 640x480)

for whatever reasons i have some more kernels installed on my system:
2.6.28-1
same result as with 2.6.29-2 (lo! it still works)
2.6.26-2
same result as with 2.6.29-2 (alas! still no problems)

i notice that on 2.6.26-2, my camera is still shown as
> ID 04f2:b071 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd 2.0M UVC WebCam / CNF7129

so either the models to differ, or squeeze/sid is simply more verbose than intrepid. (googling a bit suggests the latter; e.g. the first hit for "CNF7129" is about the eeepc900 (!) webcam)

obviously this doesn't really help you at all.
afair, cyrille has managed to use the webcam of his eee as well...
