Hi!
0.43.4 is the version of Pd, not Gem - the latest of Gem is 0.93.3.
It is included in Pd-extended.
Did you send the message |1 ( to the gemwin? This starts rendering.
Without this you won't see anything.
Everything works fine for me at OSX 10.8.4
