It wasn't quite that simple, but I got it to work and the results are here:

I modified the configuration of the wiki slightly to get that to work. I 
added the following line to LocalSettings.php which lets you link to 
"external" images (images not maintained by the wiki itself) from a 
particular folder on the server.

$wgAllowExternalImagesFrom = 'http://m5sim.org/graphics/';
