Quoting nathan binkert <[email protected]>:

They are already in one place... the build tree ;-).  More seriously,
I'm not sure exactly which confusion you're referring to (it's hard to
keep track of it all!), but at least some of it seems to be people
getting out-of-date info off the wiki page.  Eliminating that, and
better yet replacing it with more complete and accurate info, seems
like a much simpler solution to me.

That is a better solution for sure, but people seem to periodically
say that they can't find a file (often m5.objects stuff because of the
tutorial). If the name "generated" or something like that were in the
path, perhaps people would clue in a bit. (I ask because I've been
creating more and more generated files lately).

Maybe a better alternative is to have a file in the root directory
called HIERARCHY or something like that which explains where stuff is.
Perhaps a wiki page on generated code?

Just throwing ideas out there.

The HIERARCHY idea seems pretty reasonable to me. There's a danger of it sliding out of date with the actual hierarchy over time, but I'm not personally aware of that ever changing at a high level so that would likely not be for a long, long time. How would we described generated files with that since those would be relative to the build tree, not the source tree? Or is that not a relevant detail?
