Dear Gem5 users: Does anyone know the relation between Gem5 and the Simplescalar<http://www.simplescalar.com/>, since they are both developed by the university of Michigan and both are ISA simulators, and they share some similar function names.
To be concrete with the relation I mean: Is Gem5 an enhanced version of Simplescalar, since its codes are much more comlex? If yes, why are they now independently supported by Gem5 group and Simplescalar.LLC? If not, am I right to say Gem5 is much more advanced than Simplescalar, since it supports booting unmodified linux, offers richer set of modules, etc. If the purpose is to run some SW benchmarks on an instruction-set-simulator and obtain some tracing information, those 2 are equally good and can both get the job done, right? Thanks for your answer! Best regards,* * Kun
