The instructions at http://gem5.org/BBench-gem5 assumes the reader already has some familiarity with gem5. In gem5 there are options for running certain portions of a benchmark using the fast atomic mode, then running the region of interest using the detailed mode. Search the wiki and/or mailing list for topics concerning fast-forwarding and checkpointing.
