gem5 doesn't do any sort of floor planning, so it's not that difficult
to give gem5 a configuration that isn't practical or even physically
possible.
You might be interested in "HANDS: Heterogeneous Architectures and
Networks-on-Chip Design and Simulation" from ISPLED 2012 (by Zoni,
Corbetta, and Fornaciari).
