What version of gem5 and what architecture/benchmark/os are you running? You should be able to make a checkpoint with 1, 2, or 4 cores (or as many as the particular system/platform supports). Booting without caches should work just as well as booting with caches.
You should create a checkpoint with the number of cores you wish to restore from.
