Hi, I solved the problem. I tried  Mahmood's suggestion again, to specify 
astar.cmd = [astar.executable] + ['rivers.cfg']
astar.cwd = data_dir + "473.astar/data/ref/input/"


It worked fine on the lastest version of gem5. I used ALPHA_SE mode.
