Especially if your build machine only has 8 Gbyte of memory, the LTO step can be very painful for older (<4.9) versions of gcc, as it causes swapping etc. You can either compile gem5.fast without LTO by adding “--without-lto”, or alternatively upgrade to a more recent version of gcc (or use clang).
