So far I have been using the default linux kernel x86_64-vmlinux-2.6.22.9.smp, however I have a benchmark that requires a newer kernel in order to run.
I found https://simplessd.org/build_kernel.html which seems to suggest that kernel version 4.4.84 should work and compiled this version. However gem5 just hangs without an error message when I try to start FS simulation. I'm wondering if anybody on this list has a 4.x.x kernel that indeed runs on gem5 and would be willing to share it, before I go ahead an find out what's going on.
