You should look at the tutorial slides/video like Ali suggest, but to get you started it sounds like you're expecting output on the terminal where you ran m5. Unlike SE mode, the only thing you'll see there are messages from m5 itself and not output from the simulation. To see that, you can use the m5term program in util/term to connect to the simulation like you were connected to a real machine over a serial cable.
