The prefetch queue is just a queue of addresses generated by the prefetcher; when the cache has an opportunity it will pull an address of that queue and generate a prefetch request for it. While the prefetch request is outstanding it is tracked in the MSHRs like any other request. When the response returns, the data is put in the cache, again just like any other request.
