Exactly... the rule of thumb is... you create it.. esp on a computer its
timestamped... in a court of law though, the government seal is more
important.

According to the copyright office all creations by an artist be it music or
photos or poems are automatically copyright and owned by the person upon
creation.For instance the instant I take a photograph at a wedding the
picture is my legal copyright. As the photographer I may use that photo as I
see fit.

As the artist of a piece of music she owns the copyright automatically,
though she may setup an official copyright here

I submit all of my printed and sold photos once a month here in batch files
so that I have proof of copyright ownership and as an added bonus my ability
to collect damages for infringement goes from having to prove damage to
having the ability to collect a minimum of 25k per violation. It helps to
have the Federal Government on your side.
