When you move the files over to the external drive as long as you keep those files in the same order as they are in the current drive.
So if they are on C:\Music you can put them on a new drive as long as it is in Music. Then you can use the script linked in the Wiki to change the drive letter for each song quickly. One caveat is to make sure that you set the external drive to always have the same drive letter or when you remove it and add it back in you will end up with a different drive letter and SAM will freak.
