Hey. My problem has been solved! Thank you everyone who helped out. Especially Ahmad Al-rasheedan who noticed that it works fine for him under 1.99.1.
It seems that the bug appeared somewhere between 1.99.1 and 1.99.2+cvs.2003.07.10-1 (current Debian unstable). I will file a bug report on this later today or tonight. So, all Arabic users note that Abiword is broken after 1.99.1, and you should hold off upgrading until this has been fixed.
