hmmm! I apologise for that. I exclusively use UTF-8 in my mail client, but I don't know how to force Gmail to use UTF-8 in the web interface! Both the default encoding and the current encoding for the composition page I'm writing in now are (and were) set to UTF-8. We'll see when I receive this message.
