Howdy,
I'll be giving a presentation (draft: http://www.eatel.net/~john/javalinux/) on
using Linux to develop Java software for the Nov. 6 meeting. This has special
relevance to BRLUG because of the potential near-future job market for Java
developers with the appearance of the BR data center.
There have been a number of recent events concerning Java on the GNU/Linux OS.
Sun has recently released J2SE and J2EE SDKs for RedHat 6.0 & 6.1. I'm using
the SDKs on RedHat 6.2 successfully. IBM has released a Java Linux Development
Kit CD for the cost of shipping & handling that has has their Java SDK on it
and other tools and demo code. See http://www.ibm.com/developer/linux/ for info.
Because Linux can operate as an enterprise level server with the addition of
other open source software (CORBA ORBs, SQL RDBMS, etc.), it is very cheap
(*free*) to teach yourself the basics of developing Java for enterprise level
businesses. This will be the basis of my presentation.
Thought ya'll also might want to know that the next issue of Java Developer's
Journal will focus on Linux and Java. If I get my copy of this issue before the
meeting, I'll be sure to bring it.
