That can be a bit of a challenge. Compaq used to like to have the
diagnostic stuff in a hidden partition. If you wipe the hard drive
clean, it disappears. You can try hitting the function key as the
memory check starts, but a generally happier solution is to go to
the Compaq site with the model number and download the diagnostics
program. You can also download a "Softpaq" which contains the stuff
that is expected in the hidden partition.
I had problems identifying the specific hardware for the built in
video so I could download the driver. Found the Config.exe program
from Holin (WWW.holin.com) helpful for this. I downloaded it,
checked out the shareware version, then registered it and got key
and regular version. Put it on a bootable floppy and use it from
there.
Guess you could create a diskette with SPBLinux and the appropriate
tools on another and do the job of identifying the hardware from
Linux. Even then I don't know how you would find Linux drivers for
the video, etc. chips Compaq likes to build into the motherboard.
Compaq is one of my least favorite brands for ease in diagnosing,
fixing, and upgrading. Built like a tank, but almost everything
is proprietary.
