Well, considering this is posted to the "Linux Users Group", and that the
low cost of spare hard drives makes fips and format such a relative
non-issue... Iiiii dunnooooo. I've heard of a few cd-kernel
distributions, and they're a great idea. They're especially great for
students and brand-new users. You can boot from a working system on the
cd and store data only on the hard drive. I remember a review about one
in LJ not too long ago.

I'm not at all trying to be difficult, 'cause this has its uses, but I'd
rather emphasize the ease of use and total absence of installation that cd
versions provide than the cons of Linux and danger to your hard drive.
Hard drives are just too cheap anymore to really justify "worry". I'd
suggest, in an ideal situation, that a brand-new user buy a $60 hard drive
to install Linux on by itself. I rarely resize partitions unless I'm
installing on a laptop or something. It's just not "easy" and not really
materially "necessary".
